Bolgoda Lake, which has a surface area of 347kms is the largest natural lake in Sri Lanka located just 20KM from the city of Colombo.
Bolgoda Mangroves, Flora, and Fauna
The Bolgoda Lake boasts an amazing ecosystem that is rich in diversity. It is home to different varieties of terrestrial, aquatic and semi-aquatic plants including annuals, biannual, and perennials. While famous for its verdant mangroves, the Lake also features different varieties of grass and trees.
Based on a study carried out in 2007, a total of 101 plant species belonging to 51 families has been recorded within the Bolgoda Lake area. Of these species, seven have been identified as endemic, while one nationally endangered, and three globally endangered species, have been recorded.
Eighty-two fauna species have been recorded within the Villa area. The recorded species include ten species of butterflies, three species of amphibians, nine species of reptiles, forty-seven bird species and eleven species of mammals. Interestingly, a single species of birds and two species of mammals are endemic to the country.
It is important to note that one-third of Sri Lanka's fauna can be found in and around Bolgoda Lake. This is approximately one-tenth of the total number of endemics recorded for the country. Approximately one-third of identified species of the Sri Lankan amphibians can be found in Bolgoda Lake. The high number of migrant and aquatic birds also enhances the fauna. Therefore, Bolgoda Lake Villa is a haven for naturalists and nature enthusiasts.
Fishing
Avid fishermen have been visiting Bolgoda Lake for centuries. The Lake is home to multiple varieties of fish. There is no restriction for fishing at the Bolgoda Lake. While the preferred method of fishing is angling, many continue to use the traditional fishing technique of 'Ja-Kotuwa' for fishing as well. 'Ja kotuwa' utilizes bamboo dividers which are hoisted in the middle of the lake and forms a trap for fish. Night-time fishing is aided by the illumination of kerosene lamps.
Water Sports Activities
While being in nature’s sanctuary one cannot even think of missing out an opportunity to admire this magnificent lake, these water sports activities are also available: fishing, kayaking, canoeing, jet skiing, parasailing, Boat tours, nature tours, Bird Watching, river safaris, mangrove tours and much more.

While you are at the Villa, you will see and hear many exotic species of birds and wild animals such as monkeys, water monitors, crocodiles, eagles, parrots, kingfisher and many other species of migratory birds. With so many exotic sights and sounds, and so much to do in and around Bolgoda Lake Villa, there will never be a dull moment.

Mount Lavinia Beach
Located just a few minutes from the Villa, The Mount Lavinia Beach is fast becoming one of the coolest places for people to hang out at. Mount Lavinia Beach has the softest sand and the waves are calm and clear for most of the year.
Nightlife comes alive with some of the funkiest beach parties involving well-known celebrity artists. Attracting many a tourist, Mount Lavinia beach is making its mark not only on the map of Sri Lanka but globally as well.
However, this is not only what the beach has to offer, during the day it’s a place for families to have a fun day out, some playing rugger on the sand, children making sand castles, taking a slow stroll, some bringing their dogs for a walk, lunch or snack at one of the many restaurants along the beach etc. Don't miss a visit to the 200+year old famous Mount Lavinia Hotel and its Spa, "CocoSpa" located on the beach set amidst the view of the Indian Ocean, the mangroves and palms.
Towards evening, it is a quiet relaxed venue to enjoy a beer whilst enjoying a plate of delectable seafood and viewing a gorgeous sunset. The restaurants located along the stretch, all offer scrumptious menus. One can find a place specific to one’s taste and budget. Seafood Cove (located in the Mount Lavinia Hotel), Loon Tao, Steam Boat, Lavinia Breeze, The Shore by O and Buba are to name a few.
Day Trips from the Villa to Tourist Attractions
Bolgoda Lake Villa is centrally located to most famous tourist attractions in Sri Lanka. We offer many day trips to these attractions, you will leave the Villa in the morning and return back to the villa at dusk. Each trip can accommodate up to 14 guests for one flat rate.
